Cyberpunk 2077 is seeing a huge resurgence, and the devs are loving it. Pawel Sasko, Cyberpunk 2077 quest director, has recently spoken on his Twitch channel via GamesRadar. He explained to the fans how it means a lot to see the game picked up so long after its initial launch.
“It’s hard to express when you’re putting so much heart and work into something. And you know, for some of us, it’s been six, seven, eight years sometimes, especially for those who started at the very beginning. So, to have this moment, of people liking something that we did, it’s really feeling a bit unreal. That finally people are appreciating it.”
Cyberpunk 2077 debuted with a troublesome start on December 10, 2020. A disastrous console introduction on the base versions of Xbox One and PS4 saw extensive glitches and bugs. It was such an immense problem that Sony immediately delisted the game. Developer CD Projekt Red and PS Store even offered refunds to the buyers.
The game eventually got relisted in June 2021. However, this time it was with a warning to play it on PS5 and PlayStation Pro. Upgraded Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation versions of Cyberpunk 2077 were finally released on February 15, 2022.
“After the release, I couldn’t believe – after some time, I did – but at the beginning, I couldn’t believe, and I remember […] my dear girlfriend, she was seeing me f**king completely wrecked,” said Sasko. “But it’s good to be back. It’s f**king good to be back. That was really so heartbreaking.”
Following the criticism, CD Projekt Red worked very hard to improve the game, releasing numerous patches and bug fixes throughout the game’s existence. But probably most crucially, the game has had a resurgence due to the enormous popularity of its spin-off anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
The review of IGN’s Cyberpunk Edgerunners said,
“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners delivers a satisfying return to Night City that does a better job exploring why Mike Pondsmith’s famous location became so iconic in the first place.”
Record numbers of people have played Cyberpunk 2077 since the release of this anime.
In the week after Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’ release, nearly a million players played Cyberpunk 2077 every day, according to CD Projekt Red. They are playing a better game thanks to enhancements, a next-gen update, and bug fixes from February 2022.
