Fans have been demanding Henry Cavill return to the role of Superman in the DCEU since before the calls for the Snyder Cut were even made. It appears like their wish may be granted.
According to an extended article published by THR, in which it is also said that James Gunn is covertly developing another DC movie, WB Discover reportedly has an “intense yearning” to see Cavill once again don the red cape. A project that would “basically be Man of Steel 2” is supposedly looking for writers.
In addition to discussing a prospective Flash sequel and Matt Reeves’ intentions for spin-offs based on Batman’s rogues’ gallery, the report highlights many projects, including Superman. It also indicates the chaotic situation at WB Discovery as it searches for its own Kevin Feige to lead the DCEU’s productions.
“The Rock is said to be vying with others to determine Superman’s destiny in the wake of the upcoming departure of DC president Walter Hamada. The Hollywood Reporter states that Johnson is eager to direct a “Black Adam vs. Superman” starring Cavill. Johnson made the following comment when asked if Black Adam would take on Superman.
“Absolutely. That is the whole point of this. There’s a new era in the DC universe that’s about to begin.”
The premiere of Black Adam isn’t till the week’s end, but Johnson has already shown off the film’s post-credits stinger, featuring Henry Cavill. THR reports that Hamada declined the cameo at first, but Johnson persisted and eventually secured the role with the help of Warner Bros. Pictures bosses Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy. The scene was filmed in the middle of September.
Back in July at San Diego Comic-Con, Johnson was booed for appearing to throw doubt on Cavill’s return to the Superman role by saying,
“I guess it probably all depends on who is playing Superman; I’m just going to say that. I’ll leave it at that.”
However, Hamada has been a vocal supporter of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Black Superman tale outside of the DCEU, which will still be produced by J.J. Abrams.
After being largely lambasted in Justice League, Cavill’s Superman returned in the film’s so-called Snyder Cut. Although Superman’s place in the DCEU was said to be uncertain as recently as 2017, things appear to have turned around for the Man of Steel.
Whoever succeeds Hamada in his role at WB Discovery will determine the show’s future. THR reports that De Luca approved Joker 2 and could be given a more permanent position with DC.
Meanwhile, on October 21, Black Adam will finally be available to the public.
