HBO’s Game of Thrones witnessed the return of Westeros’ dragons after almost two centuries. The prequel series House of the Dragon was based on George R.R. Martin’s story of the Targaryen dynasty’s rise and fall, titled Fire & Blood. It is set back in the days when many dragons dominated the skies of Westeros. This is the story of how they came to die off.
House of the Dragon will feature dragons as protectors of different Targaryen factions and powerful weapons in a war dubbed the Dance of the Dragons. This long-running campaign among the various Targaryen claimants for the Iron Throne will be tragic for all parties, dragon and human alike.
Here is a list of every Dragon that appeared in the Dance of the Dragons. Many of the dragons have made their debuts on House of the Dragon. However, many more are not expected to make an appearance for several seasons because of the significant periods documented in Fire & Blood.

Balerion the Black Dread
Balerion, the Targaryen’s oldest and largest dragon, was flown by Aegon, The Conqueror. He later became the steed for King Viserys II. Although the black and red mal dragon died before House of the Dragon began, his huge skull can still be seen at the Red Keep.

Vhagar
Vhagar, the second-largest Targaryen dragon, is an ancient female Dragon. It was flown by Aegon during his conquest. She served as Queen Visenya Targaryen’s steed. They destroyed the Arryn fleet off Gulltown together. Vhagar was named after the God of Old Valyria. This will be a factor in future developments at House of the Dragon.

According to George R.R. Martin’s official companion book, The World of Ice & Fire, the yellowish Syrax is the “huge & formidable” female steed of Princess Rhaenyra. (Milly Alcock portrays her as a young girl, and Emma D’Arcy portrays her as an adult in House of the Dragon).

Sunfyre
It’s easy to see why this male dragon, with his flame and golden scales, is called “Sunfyre the Golden.” He is the steed of Aegon II Targaryen (who’ll be played in House of the Dragon both as an adult by Tom Glynn–Carney and as a youngster by Ty Tennant).
Vermithor
The Bronze Fury, the third-largest dragon in The World of Ice & Fire, is described as “old and hairy” by The World of Ice & Fire. This is because this male dragon was once Jaehaerys I Targaryen’s steed.
Silverwing
This she-dragon was once ridden by Queen Alysanne Targaryen. It will become the steed of Ulf the White in the future, a character known as a “dragon seed” yet to be introduced in House of the Dragon.
Meleys
“The Red Queen” belongs to Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best). The World of Ice & Fire describes Meleys as “old and cunning, lazy, but fearsome when roused.”
Moondancer
The World of Ice & Fire describes her as a “slender, beautiful” female dragon. She is a small but fast steed of Lady Baela Targaryen, who will be portrayed by Shani Smethurst (the younger Baela) and Bethany Antonia (the adult Baela).
Seasmoke
This white and grey dragon is still young during the Dance of Dragons. Nevertheless, it creates a bond with Ser Laenor Velaryon (Theo Nate played the teen, and John Macmillan played the adult).
Dreamfyre
This blue and silver she-dragon was the steed of Princess Rhaena Targaryen (daughter of Aenys I) and Queen Helaena Targaryen at various times. In House of the Dragon, Helena will play by Phia Saban, an adult, and Evie Allen, a youth.
Tessarion
“The Blue Queen” belongs to Prince Daeron Targaryen. The casting of this role is not yet revealed in House of the Dragon. This female dragon breathes blue flame. It is seemingly younger than Sunfyre, Dreamfyre, and Vhagar.
Stormcloud
This male dragon will not be seen in the early episodes of House of the Dragon. However, later we will see him as Aegon the Younger’s steed.
Vermax
This young male dragon will be the steed for Prince Jacaerys Velaryon (Harry Collett as an adult and Leo Hart as a youth).
Arrax
It is five times smaller than Vhagar. The young male dragon belongs to Prince Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault as an adult and Harvey Sadler as a youth).
Tyraxes
Tyraxes, the steed of Prince Joffrey Velaryon Velaryon, a dragon rider, was not as large as Vermax or Arrax. House of the Dragon has yet to cast Joffrey in the role.
Morghul
Young Morghul is bound to Princess Jaehaera Targaryen. Her role is not cast yet.
Shrykos
This female dragon belongs to Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen. Again, the role is not cast yet.
Morning
The offspring of Syrax, this she-dragon, was hatched during the Dance of the Dragons. Morning has pink scales and black horns and is the steed of Lady Rhaena Targaryen (to be played as an adult by Phoebe Campbell and as a youth by Eva Ossei-Gerning).

Sheepstealer
It is a plain brown wild dragon. It is tamed by Nettles. The World of Ice & Fire describes Nettles as a baseborn disreputable girl. She feeds mutton to the dragon and wins it over. The character cast is not yet revealed in the series.

The Cannibal
This beast is not yet introduced in the series. The wild Cannibal is shown in Fire & Blood as never-tamed and ridden. It eats other dragons, which give him his name. The legend says it has been lurking on Dragonstone since before the Targaryens’ arrival.
The Grey Ghost
This is a wild dragon like the Cannibal. It was never tamed and ridden in House of the Dragon. It seemingly eats fish.
