The Harry Potter actress Helena Bonham Carter has spoken out in defense of J.K. Rowling as she continues to face criticism. Even though Rowling is responsible for one of the most successful fantasy series of all time, she has been mired in controversy over the past few years due to many tweets. She comments that many people took to be transphobic. The bestselling author has even received death threats. Many of the actors from the Harry Potter films have spoken out about Rowling’s convictions, and she has stayed mainly devoted to them.

In a recent interview with The Times, Hollywood actress Helena Bonham Carter discussed the criticisms levelled at Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. The actor who plays Bellatrix Lestrange responded to critiques of Rowling by calling them “horrendous” and “a bunch of bollocks” and backed her. Below is what Carter has to say about it:

I think she has been hounded. It’s been taken to the extreme, the judgmentalism of people. She’s allowed her opinion, particularly if she’s suffered abuse. Everybody carries their own history of trauma and forms their views from that trauma, and you have to respect where people come from and their pain. You don’t all have to agree on everything — that would be insane and boring. She does not mean it aggressively. She’s just saying something out of her own experience. Personally, I feel [my costars] should let her have her opinions, but I think they’re very aware of protecting their own fan base and their generation.

Rowling Has Made a sharp split in Harry Potter Fans & Its Cast

Carter isn’t the only Harry Potter actor to speak in favor of the franchise’s source author, with Voldemort actor Ralph Fiennes has frequently spoken out in defense of Rowling, believing that she should be celebrated for writing a whole franchise about “empowerment” and criticizing those speaking out against her as being “disgusting” and “appalling.” In addition, the late Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid, said that some of the viewers needed to “get over yourself” even though he sounded “a grumpy old guy.” Even beyond the realm of the franchise, comedian Eddie Izzard has defended Rowling, saying that she is not transphobic and that people should instead focus on the difficulties she has had as a woman.

Rowling’s future with Warner Bros. Discovery and the Harry Potter property doesn’t appear to be in jeopardy despite the controversy surrounding her. Despite the last Fantastic Beasts movies’ lackluster performance at the box office and mixed reviews from reviewers and consumers, new WBD CEO David Zaslav has revealed an interest in reviving the franchise. Fans may rewatch the entire Wizarding World series on HBO Max as they wait for news about the future.
