Nia DaCosta, the director of The Marvels, and Teyonah Parris, the film star, discuss how the relationship between Monica and Carol will affect Ms. Marvel in light of the unique dynamic of WandaVision already established between the two. The Marvel story has been kept a secret, with the sole information coming from footage currently being shown at the D23 Expo. The WandaVision events and the Ms. Marvel post-credits scene, in which Kamala Khan and Carol mysteriously switched places. The plot is anticipated to be continued in the MCU sequel. The trailer also teases that they and Monica find out that they constantly switch places whenever they use their powers, so they must try to figure out why. The three must work together to find the reason. Thus viewers may anticipate seeing a distinctive dynamic between The Marvels.
Nia DaCosta and Teyonah Parris of The Marvels discussed the upcoming MCU sequel with Entertainment Weekly when they were at the D23 Expo. The director and lead actor hinted that the movie will go into more detail about the friendship between Monica and Carol. DaCosta added that Ms. Marvel will be significantly impacted by this dynamic. Well, I think when we leave WandaVision, and we see that there may be some tension between Carol and Monica, and so you see these two come together, finally, and deal with things like that.
Nia DaCosta:
While Carol and Monica are having to find their relationship again after all this time apart, we have Ms. Marvel who idolizes Carol in the way that Monica used to when she was younger. So, you have these two adults having to reconcile their relationship while this younger person is also having a relationship that mirrors the way Monica and Carol used to be together. So I find it really interesting to see them together and how they become a little bit of a sisterhood with their own different points of view. It’s actually really nice and fun and very sweet watching them all work together.
Will Monica & Carol remain at odds after WandaVision?
According to Parris, The Marvels’ storylines will continue from WandaVision, where Monica, an adult, has grown frustrated with Carol and feels that she should have returned to Earth following the events of the first Captain Marvel, specifically as her mother Maria passed away from cancer. Since it was announced that Monica would feature in the movie, teased at the end of the Disney+ show. The teaser showed that she was called up to space to meet an unknown friend of her mother’s. As a result, audiences have been excited to see this relationship further developed in The Marvels. Given that Nick Fury will also be in The Marvels, it is likely that he is the friend Monica is to meet. This curiously places Monica closer to Carol than before her switch with Kamala in Ms. Marvel.
After WandaVision, Monica and Carol might become at odds, but DaCosta’s mention of their friendship in The Marvels and how it affected Ms. Marvel is a positive indicator of how they reconcile. Combining both sets of remarks, it appears that Ms. Marvel, the young MCU hero, could be the key to restoring Monica and Carol’s friendship. Vellani has already hinted that Ms. Marvel will be the force that binds the group together. However, for an accurate story, we will have to wait for “The Marvels'” release. It is set to premiere in theatres on July 28, 2023.
