Actress Joanne Whalley talks about playing the part of Daredevil once again in the upcoming Disney+ series, Daredevil: Born Again. Sister Maggie Grace, played by Whalley, was introduced in season 3 of the hit Marvel Netflix drama. Father Paul Lantom (Peter McRobbie) sends Daredevil, aka Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), to Sister Maggie at the Saint Agnes Orphanage after he was severely injured in The Defenders. Eventually, the hero finds that Sister Maggie is actually his mother, who left him and his father because of postpartum depression.
Whalley discusses the prospect of a return to the character of Karen Page in the upcoming Marvel Netflix series Daredevil: Born Again in a recent interview with ComicBook.com. The star talks about the “wonderful time” she had filming the first season. Below, Whalley explains why she wants to play the part again.
“I loved Daredevil! I had such a great time on that, oh my God. I haven’t heard anything [about returning], but I would love to get the wimple on again, though. Talking about characters to play again, I loved her.”
Whalley has not yet been contacted to return to the Daredevil franchise in her original role in the next Netflix series. Deborah Ann Woll, who played Murdock’s assistant Karen Page, Rosario Dawson, who played Nurse Claire Temple, and Jessica Henwick (Colleen Wing) are also waiting for the call. The ruthless industrialist and criminal lord Wilson Fisk, or Kingpin, will again be played by Vincent D’Onofrio in the new show. So far, he is the only returning cast member for Daredevil: Born Again besides Cox.
The first season of Daredevil: Born Again, part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five and will premiere on Disney’s streaming service in 2024, will consist of 18 episodes, making it the longest of Disney+’s original Marvel series so far. D’Onofrio has hinted that the forthcoming series will go deeper into the characters and keep fans on the edge of their seats after each episode. However, he hasn’t revealed much about the plot. Cox has also implied that Daredevil: Born Again will not be a straightforward sequel to the Netflix series. There has been no explanation of Daredevil: Born Again’s place in the larger MCU continuity.
Although D’Onofrio reprised his role as Kingpin in last year’s Hawkeye, Alaqua Cox’s Maya Lopez/Echo offered a new villain in the form of a ruthless assassin for Kingpin who begins to question her intentions and relationship with him towards the end of the film. Featuring Kingpin and Murdock, the new character’s own TV show is scheduled to premiere in the middle of 2023. Marvel Studios is set to establish the groundwork for these legendary characters before Daredevil: Born Again arrives on Disney+ in 2024. Meanwhile, the hero and the villain will be appearing in many Marvel shows before the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again.
