Marvel Comics has introduced a very impressive and brand-new Avengers team of 2099. The group is all set to debut in the limited series of Spider-Man 2099: Exodus. The fans expect the new release to be an alluring addition to Marvel’s original lore. In addition, some anticipate that the new addition has enough intrigue to have its own series so we can delve deeper into the storyline.
Marvel launched its 2099 imprint in 1992, featuring plots in a dystopian future world. The mega-corporations rule the lotted world. Miguel O’Hara, the first Spider-man of the future world, appeared in this era, followed by other futuristic versions of Marvel heroes. The new version includes Hulk, Doom, Ghost Rider, and The Punisher. Besides the updated versions of known Marvel heroes, they also introduced new super protagonists and antagonists such as Ravage.
While we have seen the Avengers teams briefly in the future timeline, it is the first time they are getting the spotlight. Moreover, Spider-Man 2099: Exodus – Alpha #1 confirms that the Masters of Evil have butchered the team’s previous incarnation. Unfortunately, the sources have not leaked any more details for now. However, as per Spider-Man, Norman Osborn, one of the Masters, used the great shock to create Cabal, a group that rules the world uncontested. So, the Avengers of 2099 finally reassemble to defeat the Cabal once and for all.
Now the question arises whether Spider-Man 2099 is Making a mistake by bringing in the other heroes under the spotlight.
In Spider-Man 2099: Exodus #3, the Egyptian God of Vengeance, Khonshu, assembles a new Avengers team. The team has a significant mission to stop the Cabal from dominating the Garden. The Garden is a wealth of precious substances that the fall of a dead Celestial created on Earth. Khonshu himself is part of this team. He is now the Moon Knight. The team also includes Spider-Man 2099, Captain Marvel (Rowena Stern), the bestial future Hulk (John Eisenhart), Wave (Mackenzie Salgado), Aero (Zhe Li), and Black Panther (T’Shamba), and Captain America (Roberta Mendez). Each hero has lost something important to the Masters of Evil. They will eventually end the threat forever with the given agenda, restoring the world’s hope.
The characters of some of the new Avengers, like Captain America and Hulk, are based on the two different 2099 world iterations (Earth-928 & Earth-23291). Miguel O’Hara fused these iterations into a new 2099 timeline. Moreover, each Avengers 2099 team member has a unique backstory. For instance, Roberta Mendez did not acquire the power of Captain America with the Super-Soldier Serum. But she also possessed Cap’s personality that switches with her own. The other new team members are brand new creations. Unfortunately, they have a very short time span to shine due to the numerous matters in this issue. However, the official reveal of the team at the end of the story introduces more members, such as Captain Britain 2099. Furthermore, it hints at the relaunch of Marvel’s 2099 universe with an exclusive series based on The Avengers.
Spider-Man 2099: Exodus bears the challenging task of introducing an entire universe with numerous new superhero teams and characters in only six short issues. It means that the readers will inevitably feel rushed through the storyline. The Avengers of 2099 comes with very few pages to show their worth. However, they somehow managed to capture our imagination.
Since every character has an interesting history, we can easily anticipate more extended spinoffs, enabling us to further explore. The team dynamics already make Avengers Marvel’s flagship team. We hope the Avengers of 2099 will get their own series for us to explore their potential.
