Mo Amer and Ramy Youssef collaboratively created Mo. Remy was previously honored with a Golden Globe award for his honest approach to bringing the representation of Muslim Americans to television. According to Amer, the comedy’s main character is a mix of fiction and fact. Amer, a Palestinian refugee who fled the war in Palestine to Houston, Texas, where he was born, put his heart, sweat, and tears into the series.
Amer has spent his comedy career making light of his unique immigrant experiences while also shining a light on them. I’ve just been banking all these great stories – hard, painful stories that have happened to me throughout my life and fictionalizing them to make a series as we have. They’re all inspired by it. My mother, my ancestors, and my brother all have inspired this great story to tell. Yes, it’s like a Palestinian refugee immigrant story of working on the table, fish-out-of-water, trying to fit in and be seen and accepted. But it’s also like a story for everyone. It’s something that everyone can relate to. Everyone has felt insecure about where they are in the world, either socially or what they have, or living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to take care of their family.
It’s evident that people are connecting with the series now that it’s out. After many characters from Arab and Muslim American backgrounds were stereotyped or ignored, this series is a positive step in the right direction. The actor is now working in Black Adam, a DC movie.
