Producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia shared some exciting news about the sequels to Red Notice. The action-comedy Red Notice, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Ritu Arya, debuted on Netflix on November 4, 2021. Johnson plays FBI agent John Hartley, who reluctantly joins forces with Reynolds’s Nolan Booth, a notorious art thief. Together they aim to foil the plans of Gal Gadot’s Sarah Black/The Bishop, a more notorious art thief. However, all three characters hide secrets, and not everything is as it seems.
Although critics gave divided opinions on Red Notice, that didn’t prevent it from raking in a massive audience. The movie received the highest viewership on its first day than any other Netflix film. It broke record after record after its release, eventually becoming Netflix’s most-watched film in just 28 days. There were rumors of a sequel to Red Notice even before the first episode had aired. As a result of first success, two follow-up movies have now been approved and will begin production simultaneously. The creators of Red Notice have updated fans on the status of these follow-ups.
Flynn and Garcia, the filmmakers behind Red Notice, recently spoke with Collider and shared some encouraging news about their plans for a sequel. Even though filming hasn’t begun yet, there is still a lot happening behind the scenes. Here are some of their comments:
Flynn: Well, we have a ‘Red Notice 2’ script and almost [Red Notice] 3. The plan is, hopefully, if Hiram and I have of our way that we would make those movies back-to-back. But it’s going to be all about the scripts and how we feel and how Dwayne, Gal, and Ryan feel about them. But that franchise is a blast, and obviously, Netflix really wants it, and Rawson [Marshall Thurber, director and screenwriter] is committed.
Garcia: Yeah, Rawson (Marshall Thurber) is working away, and we were just talking to him about it the other day. He’s deep in it, and that’s his baby. So, he’s grinded away. We’re excited to be able to get into it and see a new draft that he’s about to deliver us to us very soon.”
The creators of Red Notice appear to be confident in the success of the sequels, and they have confirmed that production is well underway. More information about the sequel’s plot may become available as the scripts near completion. The three main actors (Reynolds, Johnson, and Gadot) are expected to return for both sequels as of now. Even though they are all wanted criminals, the trio have decided to work together to pull off future heists. The second installment of Red Notice will pick up where the first left off, with the trio sizing up the Louvre in Paris. It is unclear what they want or whether they can trust one another. Red Notice 3 will likely continue the story of the protagonist trio from the second film. Still, we won’t know much about the plot until the conclusion of the second film.
An official release date for Red Notice appears to be the next step. Even so, Flynn and Garcia did offer the caveat that the schedule is subject to change based on the opinions of the entire cast and crew. Back-to-back shooting may or may not go ahead, depending on how much work is needed on the scripts. Once the scripts are complete, production could move quickly if everyone involved is committed to seeing the sequels through to completion. Red Notice 2 may be released in time for the 2023 holiday season if production on the sequels continues to run smoothly.
