Now that 2022 is history, Top Gun: Maverick has become the highest-grossing film of all time. In Maverick, the sequel to Top Gun, Tom Cruise plays Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who returns to Naval fighter jets and embarks on a covert mission to destroy an unauthorized uranium production. The movie has been a massive hit since its May release, topping box office charts and receiving rave reviews.

Top Gun: Maverick finished the year with a worldwide box office total of $1.48 billion, according to Box Office Mojo, just barely besting out Avatar 2’s $1.39 billion take and Jurassic World: Dominion, which dominated the box office despite receiving negative reviews and earned just over $1 billion. Minion: The Rise of Gru and Doctor Strange: Journey to the Multiverse round out the top five. Both movies did quite well at the box office this year, but neither made more than $900 million.

How Much More Money Will Avatar Make at the Box Office?

Although it was a great movie, Avatar: The Way of Water’s December 16 release date in 2022 left little chance for it to become the year’s best-selling film. It’s worth noting that Avatar: The Way of Water’s success never slowed down and that it even surpassed a Top Gun: Maverick benchmark by generating $956.9 million at the international box office, compared to Top Gun’s $770 million.

Although Avatar 2 box office was hit hard by a winter storm, its $440.5 million domestic total is only anticipated to increase over the holiday weekend. After only three weeks in theatres, it has already earned more than $1 billion internationally. You can expect it to easily surpass the goal and compete with the $2.79 billion worldwide gross of Avengers: Endgame.

What movie of them all has the most chance of being the most successful in 2023?

In 2023, audiences will have their pick of several anticipated blockbuster superhero movies from studios including Marvel, Sony, and DC Universe. The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 are all scheduled for release in 2023. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 have a shot at breaking box office records because they feature Kang’s introduction and the final appearance of the titular squad.

On the other hand, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Kraven the Hunter are both set to debut this year courtesy of Sony. After the box office disappointment of Morbius, the former isn’t likely to set any records, but Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse just might. The DC Extended Universe continues with the releases of Shazam! Blue Beetle, Aquaman, and The Flash.

In light of the phenomenal success of the first film in the franchise, the Aquaman sequel may have the best shot at becoming the highest-grossing film of all time. The next Tom Cruise film, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, will go up against Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Fast X, and Dune: Part Two, among other non-superhero projects. If the success of Top Gun: Maverick is any indication, Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning has a good chance of becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023.
