This week, the full trailer for the upcoming horror Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey was made public. The gory update to the beloved children’s character is generating a lot of buzz. However, it doesn’t have the honeybees like the Disney version. The original Winnie the Pooh stories by A.A. Milne are now available in the public domain. As long as no visuals or characters created specifically by The Walt Disney Company for their version of Pooh Bear are used, the characters from the Hundred Acre Wood may be used in any way that anyone wishes. However, the creative team behind the movie seems not to be content only with Pooh. They have other ideas for horror-oriented versions of characters in the public domain, including Thor and Peter Pan.

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey became public immediately following Milne’s books’ entry into the public domain. It caused an immediate stir due to its unsettling combination of children’s beloved characters in a Jason Voorhees framing. Rhys Waterfield, director of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, has spoken to TMZ that which characters he might add to his terrifying transformation.

“Essentially we’ve been kind of doing that for the last like year now. Like with you know Humpty Dumpty and things like that and there were other ideas we had in mind. For example, like Thor, the Norse God isn’t the property of Marvel, so we could do our own interpretation of that if we wanted. It didn’t have the same ring as Winnie, so we went on Winnie and did that. We’ve got loads of other ones planned as well, so like we’re doing a Peter Pan one.”

Winnie Pooh’s Blood and Honey is essentially a dystopian sequel to the classic stories by A.A. Milne. It leaves behind happy picnics, friendly cooperation for hammers and axes, and lots of blood. Instead, the story moves backward, focusing on Christopher Robin’s childhood and his less frequent visits with his furry friends. He left Pooh, Piglet, and Eeyore behind when he left for college.

While the horror project is not recommended for children, the creative retelling of Pooh’s story and his friends’ adventures is certainly worth a look. It shows what happens when innocent stories enter the public domain. ‘Blood and Honey’ has yet to be released but will arrive on DVD and VOD later in the year.
